J02, J05 and J07 are not multiple-choice examinations. The official CII unit pages describe each as a two-hour written short-answer exam with a standard pass mark of 55%. That changes the central preparation question.
It is not enough to ask, “Would I recognise the correct point?” You need to ask, “Can I retrieve, organise and type the required points when no answer choices are supplied?”
The official CII assessment library publishes question papers and test specifications for these non-multiple-choice units. Those documents show the breadth and applied nature of the questions. Your preparation should therefore include complete typed responses, not only reading, highlighting or answer-choice quizzes.
The Three CII Typed Written Units
| Unit | Technical focus | What the answer must demonstrate | Preparation route |
|---|---|---|---|
| J02 Trusts | Trust creation, parties, administration, taxation and planning | Accurate legal and tax distinctions applied to the facts | Prepare for CII J02 |
| J05 Pension Income Options | Decumulation, annuities, drawdown, tax, death benefits and advice | Comparisons, calculations and suitability judgements | Prepare for CII J05 |
| J07 Supervision in a Regulated Environment | Leadership, competence, regulation, performance and employment | Concise explanations of models, controls and applied supervisory action | Prepare for CII J07 |
All three demand production. The technical subject changes, but the response skill is shared: interpret the command verb, use the marks to control depth, select distinct points, apply them and stop before irrelevant knowledge consumes time.
What “Typed Exam Practice” Should Mean
A genuine typed practice paper should require you to:
- read the scenario and every question part;
- type each response into an answer field;
- work under an overall time limit;
- use the mark allocation to judge the required depth;
- show calculation stages where relevant;
- submit a complete paper rather than reveal answers immediately; and
- review feedback against a transparent set of expected points.
An ordinary multiple-choice bank does a different job. It can test recognition and expose weak knowledge, but the options prompt your memory. In a written paper, the prompt is removed. A candidate can score well on answer-choice drills and still struggle to produce a six-mark explanation from a blank response field.
The Only Specialist Platform Covering All Three Typed Papers
CII Academy is the only specialist CII preparation platform offering a full typed online practice paper across J02, J05 and J07, together with a free typed-answer preview for each course.
Every full practice paper follows the published two-hour structure with 15 compulsory short-answer questions carrying 130 marks. You type the answers yourself. After submission, AI-assisted feedback checks the response against independently authored, source-backed marking criteria and identifies which expected points were present, incomplete or missing.
This is deliberately different from asking a general chatbot whether an answer “sounds good.” The criteria are attached to the specific question, question part, command verb, marks and examinable area. The result is still a practice estimate—not an official CII grade—but it gives you a repeatable way to diagnose the visible answer.
Use Marks as an Answer Budget
Marks are not a perfect word-count formula, but they are an essential control.
For a two-mark “state” question, two accurate and distinct points may be enough. A six-mark “explain” or “analyse” question usually needs more development: several separate points, a reason or consequence, and application where the scenario requires it.
Before typing, create a quick answer map:
- underline the command verb;
- note the available marks;
- identify the subject boundaries;
- list the distinct points you intend to make; and
- allocate time before beginning full sentences.
This prevents a common failure: writing an excellent paragraph about one familiar issue while leaving several other scoring opportunities untouched.
Adjust the Method for Each Unit
J02: keep legal, administrative and tax points separate
J02 answers often fail when a candidate blends different layers of a trust problem. Identify the parties, ownership and trust type first. Then separate trustee powers and administration from income tax, capital gains tax and inheritance tax consequences. Apply the relevant rule only after the legal structure is clear.
The J02 written-answer technique guide provides a practical point–reason–application method.
J05: compare every option under the same headings
J05 needs controlled comparisons. Consider income shape, guarantees, access, tax, death benefits, investment risk, longevity risk and suitability under consistent headings. If a calculation is required, show the working and then explain what the result means for the client.
Use the J05 pension-income comparison method to keep competing options on equal terms.
J07: name the model, then make it operational
J07 can reward accurate recall of management and supervisory models, but naming a model is rarely the whole job. Define the relevant element, connect it to the firm or employee facts and state the practical supervisory consequence. Separate points clearly so the examiner can see each response.
The J07 supervision study plan maps retrieval and applied practice across the unit.
A Four-Stage Typed-Paper Routine
1. Baseline without notes
Start with the free typed-answer preview for your unit. Answer under a short time limit without opening notes. The objective is to reveal your current production ability, not to manufacture a perfect first attempt.
2. Classify every missed point
Label the cause of each gap:
- knowledge — the rule or concept was not known;
- retrieval — it was known but did not come to mind;
- selection — the wrong issue was prioritised;
- application — the rule was not connected to the facts;
- structure — points were merged or hidden; or
- timing — the answer was unfinished.
Each cause needs a different correction. Rereading helps a knowledge gap but may do little for a timing or structure problem.
3. Rewrite before reading the model in full
Use the feedback to create a second response in your own words. Add the missing point, tighten repeated material and make the application explicit. Only then compare the complete expected-point structure.
4. Sit the complete paper
Complete all 15 questions in one timed attempt. A sequence of isolated perfect answers does not test pacing, fatigue or the decision to move on from a difficult part. The complete paper does.
Keep the Official and Practice Roles Clear
Official CII syllabuses, unit pages, examination guides and updates remain the source of truth for the assessment. CII Academy’s questions are independently authored preparation. They are not copied live questions, official past papers or a reproduction of the CII assessment interface.
That separation is useful. The official documents define the standard. Typed practice develops the behaviour needed to meet it: retrieving the right knowledge, turning it into visible scoring points and doing so across a complete paper under time pressure.
Frequently Asked Questions

J02 Trusts, J05 Pension Income Options and J07 Supervision in a Regulated Environment are two-hour written short-answer examinations. Candidates must produce their own responses rather than select from answer choices.
2 What is the standard pass mark for J02, J05 and J07?
The current official unit pages give a standard pass mark of 55% for all three units. Confirm the format, syllabus edition and testing position for the date of your own sitting.
3 Where can I practise a complete typed CII written paper online?
CII Academy is the only specialist CII preparation platform offering a full typed online practice paper across J02, J05 and J07, with a free typed-answer preview and AI-assisted feedback checked against authored, source-backed criteria.
4 Is CII Academy's typed paper an official CII past paper?
No. The questions and marking criteria are independently authored for practice. Feedback and marks are preparation estimates, not an official CII paper, interface, result or grade.
