J05 tests whether candidates can explain pension-income options, compare risks and tax treatment, and apply the rules to client circumstances in written short answers. Preparation therefore needs to develop retrieval and decision-making, not just recognition.
The course follows the pension-income journey from crystallisation rules and transitional protections through annuities, flexible benefits, phased retirement, regulation, State benefits and ongoing advice. Detailed notes build the technical base, while flashcards, quick-reference tools and question drills help you retrieve the material under time pressure.
Use scenario practice to compare secure and flexible income, identify tax consequences, recognise regulatory duties and consider sustainability, longevity and capacity for loss. The AI tutor is available inside the platform when you need to clarify how connected rules operate.
The official assessment is a two-hour written short-answer examination with a standard pass mark of 55%. J05 is a Level 4 unit worth 20 CII credits and carries 100 recommended study hours.

The Finance Act 2004, effective from 6 April 2006 ('A-Day'), unified eight previous pension tax regimes into a single framework. The lifetime allowance (LTA), originally £1.5m, was abolished from 6 April 2024 and replaced by two new allowances: the Lump Sum Allowance (LSA) of £268,275 and the Lump Sum and Death Benefit Allowance (LSDBA) of £1,073,100. Benefits can be taken from the Normal Minimum Pension Age (NMPA) of 55, rising to 57 from 6 April 2028 under the Finance Act 2022, with a protected pension age for those whose schemes already allowed earlier access before 4 November 2021.
