A pass mark is useful only when it is attached to the right assessment. A 65% target for a 60-minute multiple-choice paper produces a different revision plan from a 55% target in a two-hour written exam. Coursework needs another method again.

The table below brings the main formats used by the CII Academy course catalogue into one place. It was checked against the official unit information and current course source records on 21 August 2026. Your own CII unit page, examination guide and booking confirmation remain the final authority for your sitting.

The percentages are standard pass marks, not promises about the number of questions or points you personally need on every practice activity. Platform quizzes, shortened demos and coursework-planning drills may use different lengths and cannot predict an official result.

Turn the Format into a Timing Plan

For a single-answer paper, average time per question is a useful first control:

  • R03, R04 and R05: about 72 seconds per question;
  • R01 and R02: about 72 seconds per question; and
  • CF8: about 96 seconds per question on average, although case-study sets need a different rhythm from standalone questions.

Do not force every question into the average. Secure straightforward marks efficiently, flag a question that is consuming too much time and return after completing the rest of the paper. In CF8, read the question before extracting the relevant facts from a longer case.

Multiple-response questions also need extra checking. Judge each statement independently, write the complete set you believe is correct, then choose the option containing all and only those statements. A combination can be wrong even when it includes one familiar true statement.

Prepare Differently for Written Units

The 55% standard used by J02, J05 and J07 does not make those papers a recognition exercise. You must produce the relevant points without answer options.

Use the mark allocation and command word to shape the response:

  1. identify whether the question asks you to state, explain, compare, calculate or recommend;
  2. create a separate answer slot for each distinct point;
  3. add workings where a calculation is required;
  4. connect the technical rule to the scenario; and
  5. review for repeated ideas and missing application.

For J02, our written-answer technique guide shows how to separate trust law, tax and administration. For J05, the pension-income comparison method gives each option the same suitability lenses. The J07 study plan combines named-model recall with timed written practice.

The CII typed written-exams guide compares all three papers and explains how to practise complete responses online. CII Academy is the only specialist CII preparation platform offering full typed practice papers across J02, J05 and J07, with a free typed-answer preview for each unit.

Treat Coursework as a Sequence, Not a Deadline

AF6 and AF8 are assessed through three assignments rather than a timed paper. A 50% threshold does not justify a minimal submission. Level 6 coursework requires analysis, application, evidence and a reasoned conclusion.

Plan backward from the exact dates shown in your own enrolment record. Build the fact analysis and calculations before drafting long prose. Keep the command word visible, distinguish client or business facts from general theory, and complete every official assignment independently in your own words.

The AF8 assignment guide provides a practical workflow from question analysis to final quality control. AF6 candidates can use the same evidence discipline alongside the AF6 study plan.

Set a Safer Practice Target

Do not use the official pass mark as the only readiness signal. A practice score can be distorted by familiarity with repeated questions, uneven topic coverage or untimed attempts.

Instead, require three forms of evidence:

  • a margin above the standard pass mark across several unseen, timed sets;
  • no recurring weak learning outcome that is being hidden by stronger topics; and
  • an error log showing that mistakes are being corrected rather than repeated.

For written work, add a fourth test: can you retrieve and organise the answer with no prompts? For coursework, ask whether each conclusion is supported by facts, calculations and evidence rather than introduced only in the final paragraph.

Check the Official Source at the Right Moments

Check the official CII unit page when you enrol, when a new examination or tax year begins, and again before the assessment. Confirm:

  • the current study edition and syllabus;
  • assessment format, duration and standard pass mark;
  • any exam-guide or study-text updates;
  • examinable dates for regulatory or tax changes; and
  • the administrative instructions in your booking or enrolment record.

That final check keeps a good revision plan attached to the assessment you will actually complete.

Frequently Asked Questions

1 What is the pass mark for a CII exam?

It depends on the unit. The units in this guide use standard pass marks of 55%, 65% or 70%, while AF6 and AF8 are assessed by coursework with a standard 50% threshold. Always confirm the current unit page for your sitting.

2 Is a CII pass mark the same as the published candidate pass rate?

No. The standard pass mark is the assessment threshold. A candidate pass rate is the percentage of a cohort that passed during a stated period and does not predict an individual result.

3 Which CII units in this guide use written exams?

J02, J05 and J07 use written short-answer assessments. AF6 and AF8 use coursework. CF8 and R01–R05 use multiple-choice formats, with multiple-response questions included in R01–R04.

4 Can CII exam formats change?

Yes. Assessment details, examinable material and administrative arrangements can be updated. Check the official unit page, examination guide and booking confirmation for the date of your assessment.
