Quick answer: CII multiple-choice exams are generally available daily, subject to appointment availability, while written exams run on fixed published dates. Book through the Bookings and Results area of MyCII. Before confirming, check the unit code, assessment type, booking deadline, delivery method, time zone and the study edition that applies on the sitting date.
The official CII Important exam deadlines and exam booking guidance pages are the final authority. This guide explains how to read them and turn a booking into a workable preparation plan.
First identify the assessment type
“CII exam date” does not mean the same thing for every unit.
| Assessment type | How the date normally works | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Multiple-choice exam | Available daily, subject to appointment availability | Voucher validity, appointment, time zone, remote or test-centre delivery |
| Written exam | Fixed published sittings | Sitting date, booking close, delivery method and results date |
| Coursework | Assignment deadlines within the enrolment | All submission and possible resubmission deadlines in RevisionMate |
| Mixed assessment | Coursework and an MCQ must both be completed in the enrolment period | The earlier coursework deadline and the separately booked MCQ |
Our CII exam formats and pass marks guide helps identify whether your unit is multiple choice, written or coursework. Do that before searching for a date: a daily MCQ appointment and a fixed J02 sitting require different planning.
Which CII exams can be booked on demand?
CII states that multiple-choice exams are available daily, subject to availability, at UK and non-UK online exam centres or through remote invigilation. For the CII Academy catalogue, that includes CF8 and R01–R05.
“Daily” does not mean that every time slot is guaranteed. Availability can depend on delivery method, location, capacity and how close you are to the intended date. Treat the appointment shown in MyCII as the real option.
Before booking an MCQ, record five items:
- the exact unit code and title;
- the assessment-entry or voucher expiry date;
- the appointment date, start time and displayed time zone;
- whether the booking is remote or at a test centre; and
- the examination-year edition that applies on that date.
The last point matters for personal-finance units. A sitting on or after 1 September can move into a new syllabus, study-text and tax-table period. Moving an appointment across that boundary is not merely a calendar change.
Which CII exams use fixed sittings?
Written units use the official timetable. CII publishes four separate fields for each sitting:
- the exam date;
- the date booking opens;
- the booking closing date; and
- the results release date.
Do not copy only the exam date into your calendar. The closing date can arrive weeks earlier, and the published result date may affect the next unit or resit decision.
Remaining 2026 written sittings relevant to financial planning
The official timetable showed the following autumn dates when checked on 1 September 2026:
| Unit | Sitting | Booking closes | Results released |
|---|---|---|---|
| J07 Supervision in a Regulated Environment | 8 September 2026 | 24 August 2026 | 6 November 2026 |
| AF1 Personal Tax and Trust Planning | 10 September 2026 | 26 August 2026 | 6 November 2026 |
| AF5 Financial Planning Process | 15 September 2026 | 31 August 2026 | 13 November 2026 |
| J02 Trusts | 17 September 2026 | 2 September 2026 | 13 November 2026 |
| AF7 Pension Transfers | 22 September 2026 | 7 September 2026 | 20 November 2026 |
| J05 Pension Income Options | 24 September 2026 | 9 September 2026 | 20 November 2026 |
| AF4 Investment Planning | 29 September 2026 | 31 August 2026 | 27 November 2026 |
| R06 Financial Planning Practice | 6 October 2026 | 21 September 2026 | 13 November 2026 |
Some closing dates in that table have already passed. Do not assume a place remains because the sitting itself is still in the future. Recheck the live CII timetable and your MyCII dashboard before acting.
For J02, J05 and J07, use the typed written-exams practice guide after the appointment is confirmed. It converts the fixed date into a plan for retrieval, timing and complete written responses.
How much does a CII exam cost?
There is no reliable single answer to “How much is a CII exam?” The amount shown can vary by unit, country or region, membership position and the purchase option selected on the current unit page.
Compare like with like:
| Purchase element | What to check |
|---|---|
| Assessment only | Whether it gives exam entry without a study text or revision aids |
| Enrolment only | Which study material and assessment entry are included |
| Enrolment plus | Which additional digital revision aids are included and which remain separate |
| Printed material | Whether print, delivery or other charges are separate from digital access |
| Resit | Whether a new assessment entry is required and what validity applies |
Use the live unit page and signed-in basket for the amount that applies to you. A third-party page may quote an older member price, a different region or an enrolment bundle rather than the assessment alone.
Price also does not confirm a booking. After buying the relevant assessment entry, return to MyCII and make sure an appointment or fixed sitting has actually been scheduled.
A safe CII exam-booking sequence
1. Confirm the unit and current official page
Open the unit page and verify its code, assessment method, current syllabus, exam guide and testing position. Similar titles and legacy units can make a remembered name unreliable.
2. Check eligibility before choosing the date
Buying an enrolment or assessment entry and scheduling an appointment are separate steps. Confirm that the assessment appears as eligible in MyCII and note the expiry date. Do not build a plan around the final day of eligibility if earlier appointments are available.
3. Choose the delivery method deliberately
For an MCQ, compare remote invigilation with a test centre. Remote delivery removes travel but adds room, equipment, internet and security requirements. A test centre reduces home-setup risk but adds travel time and venue availability.
For written units, use only the delivery choices shown for the specific sitting. CII assessment arrangements can change, and not every unit uses the same platform.
4. Read the booking confirmation immediately
Check the date, time, time zone, delivery method and candidate details while the booking is fresh. Add the appointment to a calendar with the time zone written out. If the confirmation conflicts with your expectation, use the official amendment or support process rather than relying on a personal note.
5. Work backward from three dates
Use the booking date, a full timed-mock date and the final repair date:
- booking date: the confirmed official assessment;
- mock date: early enough to expose weaknesses while there is time to fix them; and
- repair deadline: the point after which you stop adding new resources and consolidate errors, figures and exam technique.
That structure is stronger than a reading plan that simply runs until the night before the exam.
Remote invigilation: what to check before booking
CII’s current MCQ guidance says remote exams use a secure browser and live invigilation. The assessment follows the unit’s exam-guide structure, but it is delivered on screen with security checks, recording and monitoring.
Use this pre-booking check:
- a compatible PC or laptop, webcam and microphone;
- a private room that can remain uninterrupted;
- reliable internet and the ability to complete the official system check on the same device;
- acceptable photo identification;
- a mirror for the room and equipment check;
- a permitted non-programmable calculator if you plan to use one; and
- enough time before the appointment for launch and security checks.
The CII remote MCQ exam-day guidance currently tells candidates to use the confirmation link 30 minutes before the start. It also warns that an MCQ exam can be terminated if the candidate is not connected to a proctor or PSI technician within 15 minutes after the scheduled start. Re-read the live guidance near your own date because software and operational requirements can change.
Complete the official equipment test on the same device and network you will use. A successful check on a work laptop does not validate a different personal laptop, and corporate security controls can interfere with required exam software.
Test-centre booking: plan the journey as part of the exam
If you choose a centre, confirm the venue address from the appointment record rather than from an old search result. Then check:
- the required arrival time and identification;
- travel time at the relevant time of day;
- parking or public-transport contingency;
- permitted items and calculator rules; and
- the contact route if disruption occurs.
Aim to remove travel decisions from exam morning. The technical revision may be complete, but a late arrival can still end the attempt.
Coursework dates are not exam dates
AF6 and AF8 use three coursework assignments rather than one timed sitting. The operational risk is therefore different: candidates can focus on the final enrolment date and miss an earlier assignment or resubmission deadline.
Build a deadline table directly from RevisionMate:
| Assignment | First submission target | Official deadline | Feedback window | Resubmission capacity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Your earlier target | MyCII/RevisionMate date | Allow the published marking period | Preserve time before enrolment ends |
| 2 | Your earlier target | MyCII/RevisionMate date | Allow the published marking period | Preserve time before enrolment ends |
| 3 | Your earlier target | MyCII/RevisionMate date | Allow the published marking period | Preserve time before enrolment ends |
Use an earlier personal target; do not reproduce a generic date from another candidate. The AF8 coursework and assignment guide shows how to work from brief analysis to quality control without leaving the complete submission to the deadline.
Common booking mistakes
- Searching for a fixed date for an MCQ that is booked by appointment.
- Assuming “available daily” guarantees the preferred time or delivery method.
- Confusing an assessment voucher with a confirmed appointment.
- Missing the written-exam closing date while focusing on the sitting date.
- Moving a tax-sensitive unit across 1 September without changing materials.
- Reading a confirmation in one time zone and adding it to a calendar in another.
- Testing remote-exam software on a different computer or network.
- Treating a coursework enrolment end date as the only submission deadline.
- Booking two units close together without allowing for results and error review.
Once the date is confirmed, choose preparation that matches the assessment rather than collecting more generic notes. The CII Academy course catalogue identifies the format, practice tools and free sample available for each supported unit.
Frequently Asked Questions
1 When can I take a CII multiple-choice exam?
CII says multiple-choice exams are available daily, subject to appointment availability, at UK and non-UK online exam centres or by remote invigilation. The exact choices appear when you schedule through MyCII.
2 Do CII written exams have fixed dates?
Yes. Written units use published sittings with separate booking-opening, booking-closing and results-release dates. Check the official Important exam deadlines page before making a study plan.
3 Where do I book a CII exam?
Book and manage the assessment through the Bookings and Results area of your MyCII dashboard. Confirm the unit code, delivery method, time zone and appointment details before completing the booking.
4 How much does a CII exam cost?
There is no single CII exam price. It varies by unit, selected purchase option, membership position and region. Check whether the current unit-page price covers assessment only, enrolment with study material or an enhanced package before comparing costs.
5 Can I take a CII exam from home?
Remote invigilation is available for multiple-choice exams and for relevant on-screen written exams, but delivery options depend on the unit and current availability. Check the choices shown in MyCII and the current CII technical requirements.
6 Is an exam voucher the same as a booked appointment?
No. An assessment entry or voucher gives you eligibility to schedule within its validity period. You still need to choose and confirm an available appointment or fixed sitting before the applicable deadline.
