Quick answer: CII Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) can award credits for a completed, formally assessed academic or professional qualification that is sufficiently equivalent to current CII learning. The award may be an exemption from a named CII unit or, in some cases, non-unit-specific credits. It is not automatic, and employment experience or unassessed training alone is generally not enough.
Start with the official CII RPL overview and exemptions search, but do not enrol for your remaining units based only on an indicative result. CII makes the final decision from your application, existing CII record and the rules in force at the time. Once an award is claimed, check your personal learning statement before planning what to study next.
What CII RPL actually recognises
RPL is designed to avoid making a learner repeat equivalent assessed learning. Under the current CII RPL rules and policies, the prior qualification must be certificated learning. That means it involved formal assessment and was awarded by an organisation recognised by an appropriate qualifications or market regulator.
CII then considers two separate matches:
- Do the learning outcomes correspond to current CII learning?
- Is the assessment comparable in breadth, depth, level and pass standard?
Knowing a subject through work is valuable, but it does not demonstrate those two assessment tests. CII guidance says RPL is not awarded for qualifications, membership or awards achieved through experience. It also does not award RPL for seminars, lectures, presentations or training courses without formal assessment. Those activities may still support your continuing professional development or make later study easier.
Credits, exemptions and learning statements
These terms are related but not interchangeable.
| Term | What it means | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| CII unit exemption | Your assessed prior qualification closely matches a named CII unit, so CII awards the corresponding credits without requiring that unit’s direct assessment. | Whether that exemption satisfies a core or optional-unit rule in your target qualification. |
| Non-unit-specific credits | CII recognises relevant equivalent learning across a range of units where there is no sufficiently close match to one named unit. | The level of the credits and whether they reduce the units required under the qualification’s completion rules. |
| Learning statement | Your personal CII record of passes, claimed exemptions and credits. | Which requirements remain after the RPL award has been claimed and added. |
| Equivalent CII unit | A current or withdrawn CII unit may overlap another CII unit under separate equivalence rules. | The official units treated as equivalent guidance and your learning statement. |
Non-unit-specific credits do not necessarily replace a required core unit. For example, CII’s current personal-finance degree case studies explain that general degree credits may contribute towards a wider qualification route but do not replace the six core R01–R06 units of the Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning. An actual exemption from a named core unit is different.
CII also states that no qualification can be completed wholly through RPL. Even if the credits appear sufficient, at least one unit must be passed through direct CII assessment at the target qualification level or above. Completion requirements still apply, so the learning statement—not the credit total in isolation—is the useful planning document.
The main eligibility tests
Use this as a screening checklist, not as a promise of an award:
- Recognised qualification: the awarding organisation and qualification must meet the relevant regulatory or recognition standard.
- Formal assessment: there must be assessed, certificated learning, not attendance or experience alone.
- Comparable content: the learning outcomes must match a current CII unit closely enough for an exemption, or support an eligible discretionary credit award.
- Comparable standard: assessment breadth, depth, level and pass standard must be suitable.
- Completion status: academic applications must be based on a fully completed qualification. Some professional qualifications built around common standards may allow unit-by-unit consideration, but this is an exception rather than a general rule.
- Recency: the current rules apply a maximum ten-year period to academic and other qualifications. Professional-body provisions can differ, so check the category that applies to you.
- Individual completion rules: CII considers your existing passes, previous exemptions and target qualification requirements when determining the useful award.
Non-UK qualifications can be considered. CII looks for the relevant framework, UK ENIC or market-regulator recognition and applies its learning-outcome and assessment tests. A qualification being absent from the database does not by itself mean it is ineligible; it may mean CII has not reviewed it recently.
How to apply for CII RPL
The official eligibility and application page and application process and fees guidance should remain open while you apply.
1. Search for an indication
Enter the awarding organisation and qualification names exactly as they appear on your documents, plus the completion date. If either name is missing, use the site’s “other” or “not listed” route and submit an application. Make a separate application for each non-CII qualification, even where several were awarded by the same organisation.
The result is an indication of a possible maximum award, not confirmation. It can also depend on particular modules or examinations.
2. Prepare certified evidence
Gather the completion certificate and a results transcript showing the modules or units passed and their dates. Add name-change evidence where the name on the documents differs from your CII record.
CII explains several acceptable certification routes, including a current CII or Personal Finance Society member, a solicitor or notary, an awarding-organisation representative, or valid digital verification. Follow the detailed wording and evidence requirements for your chosen route. Do not send original documents unless CII asks for them.
3. Submit through MyCII
Log in or create a CII account, open the eligibility route, select Apply, enter the certifier details, upload the evidence and complete the declaration. Use a supported file type and check CII’s current filename and upload-size rules before submission.
4. Respond to evidence requests
Where CII has recently mapped the qualification, a complete application may be straightforward. CII currently aims to confirm eligibility or the next steps within 15 working days, although complex cases can take longer. Where it has not mapped the qualification, CII may request a detailed syllabus, specimen assessments, answers or marking information so that it can compare the learning and assessment properly. Respond within the deadline stated in CII’s message; an incomplete evidence set can delay or reduce the outcome.
5. Review and claim the offer
A successful outcome states the definitive award and the fee payable. At the time of writing, CII says there is no fee to submit an application; the charge applies when a successful applicant claims an exemption or set of non-unit-specific credits. Pricing is linked to the type of prior qualification and relevant CII unit enrolment price. Awards, enrolment prices, currencies and fees can change, so use the current official page rather than a saved amount or an old colleague’s receipt.
CII currently requires the offer to be claimed within the period stated in its communication. After payment is processed, it says the learning record normally updates within 24–48 hours.
Application-ready checklist
Before pressing Submit, confirm that you have:
- matched the exact qualification and awarding-organisation names;
- used one application per non-CII qualification;
- included the completion certificate and full results transcript;
- supplied correctly certified, legible copies rather than unsupported scans;
- added name-change evidence if needed;
- checked that dates, module names and passes are visible;
- kept access to syllabus and assessment material in case CII requests it; and
- read the current scheme rules, completion rules and fee guidance.
Plan study only after the learning statement updates
The best time to finalise a CII study route is after the claimed award appears on your CII learning statement. Check the named exemptions, credit level and remaining core or optional requirements. If anything appears inconsistent with the outcome letter, ask CII to clarify it before purchasing an overlapping unit.
For the specific R01–R06 structure, use our CII Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning route after the RPL decision is reflected in your record. That guide deals with unit order; this guide deals with whether prior assessed learning changes what you still need.
Once your remaining units are confirmed, compare the available CII exam preparation courses by unit and assessment style. RPL can remove duplicated study, but the units still required through direct assessment deserve a plan based on their current syllabus and exam format.
Frequently Asked Questions
1 Can work experience qualify for CII recognition of prior learning?
Work experience alone does not normally qualify. CII RPL is based on certificated learning: a recognised academic or professional qualification with formal assessment that meets the scheme criteria. Unassessed training may be relevant to continuing professional development instead.
2 What is the difference between a CII unit exemption and non-unit-specific credits?
A unit exemption is awarded where prior learning sufficiently matches a named CII unit's learning outcomes and assessment. Non-unit-specific credits may be awarded where relevant assessed learning spans several units without a close one-to-one match. Both remain subject to the target qualification's completion rules.
3 Can I complete a CII qualification entirely through RPL exemptions?
No. CII says a qualification cannot be completed wholly through prior learning. You must pass at least one CII unit by direct assessment, and that unit must be at the level of the qualification or above. Check the completion rules for your target qualification.
4 Is the CII exemptions search a guaranteed RPL award?
No. The search gives an indication of the maximum award that may be available. CII confirms the definitive award after reviewing a complete individual application against the rules and qualification framework in force at that time.
5 What documents do I need for a CII RPL application?
CII normally requires a qualification completion certificate and a results transcript showing modules or units and pass dates, with correctly certified evidence. Name-change evidence may also be needed. CII can request syllabus and assessment material for qualifications it has not recently reviewed.
6 When will an RPL award appear on my CII learning statement?
CII currently says the learning record normally updates within 24 to 48 hours after a successful applicant claims the offer and payment is processed. Check the updated learning statement before buying or booking remaining units.
