A Practical CII AF8 Retirement Income Planning Study Plan

A workable CII AF8 plan has three parallel tracks: learn the eight study chapters, practise applying them to one client fact-find, and build a repeatable assignment-writing method. Do not wait until the first assignment to test whether you can turn notes into a quantified conclusion.

The official CII AF8 unit page describes a Level 6, 30-credit unit with 150 recommended study hours. Assessment is by three written assignments, normally 2,000–3,000 words each, during a 12-month enrolment.

Map the Eight Chapters Before You Schedule Them

The study text follows this sequence:

  1. context of retirement planning;
  2. clarifying clients’ aims and objectives;
  3. analysing the client’s financial position;
  4. financial planning tools and outcomes;
  5. retirement income strategies and reviews;
  6. non-pensions investment strategies;
  7. later life planning; and
  8. estate planning.

The syllabus is organised differently. It asks you to evaluate the client’s position, use planning tools, formulate retirement-income strategies, and formulate estate, later-life and vulnerable-client strategies. Keep both maps. Chapters organise reading; the four criteria organise coverage and assignment evidence.

Start with a short R04 refresh if pension-access, tax-free cash, drawdown, annuity and annual-allowance rules are not secure. AF8 assumes those foundations and moves quickly into the quality of the advice.

Use the 150 Hours in Four Blocks

An initial allocation can look like this:

Work blockHoursOutput
Chapters 1–3: context, objectives and financial position35One completed client-position table and spending hierarchy
Chapter 4: cash flow, risk and asset allocation25Base plan plus at least four stress tests
Chapters 5–6: pension and non-pension strategies45Option comparisons with tax and sustainability calculations
Chapters 7–8: later life and estate planning25Care, authority, gift and survivor checklists
Coursework method, referencing and final review20Three timed plans and a reusable submission checklist

Adjust the split after retrieval practice. If you can define drawdown but cannot explain how an early market fall changes the client’s plan, move study time from reading into scenario analysis.

Build One Living Fact-Find Workbook

Use a single case file throughout the course. Include separate sheets or sections for:

  • objectives by amount, date, priority and flexibility;
  • income by owner, start date, security and escalation;
  • expenditure by essential, contingency and discretionary need;
  • assets and pensions by tax wrapper, liquidity, guarantees and purpose;
  • liabilities and protection;
  • risk tolerance, capacity for loss, required return and disaster risk;
  • wills, nominations, powers of attorney, gifts and dependants; and
  • missing information that would change the advice.

For every new chapter, update the same case. This exposes connections that isolated chapter notes miss. A legacy objective changes the drawdown strategy. A partner’s survivor income changes the annuity comparison. A refusal to downsize changes whether home equity is an available resource.

Chapter 1: Context of retirement planning

AF8 begins with the change from accumulation to decumulation. An adviser is no longer choosing only how contributions should grow: the plan must turn State, occupational, personal-pension and non-pension resources into income that can continue for an uncertain lifetime. The central tension is between security, flexibility, growth, tax efficiency and provision for dependants. A strong analysis separates essential expenditure from lifestyle and discretionary spending, identifies which costs should be met by secure income, and tests whether flexible assets can support the remaining objectives.

Longevity is both a personal and a financial risk. Clients often underestimate survival, while long retirement periods magnify inflation and investment uncertainty. The workbook uses age 105 as a possi…

Follow a Six-Step Weekly Cycle

1. Retrieve. Without notes, write the chapter’s main definitions, distinctions and numbers.

2. Calculate. Complete one shortfall, tax, withdrawal or estate calculation and show every working.

3. Apply. Choose three facts from the living fact-find and explain why each changes the analysis.

4. Compare. Put two credible approaches under the same headings: objective fit, tax, risk, access, dependants and review.

5. Stress. Change one assumption—early loss, inflation, longevity, partner death or care cost—and record the consequence.

6. Write. Produce a 300-word answer to one command word. “Assess,” “evaluate” and “recommend” should not produce the same structure.

This cycle creates evidence of understanding. It also exposes whether you are attaching a real rule to the wrong product or client need.

Plan the Three Coursework Milestones

The assignments fall at approximately months 3, 6 and 9, but your personal enrolment record supplies the exact dates. Work backwards from each deadline.

Six weeks before: parse the question, underline the command word and list the required facts, calculations and sources.

Four weeks before: complete the financial-position analysis and identify missing facts. Draft tables before prose.

Three weeks before: write the analytical body. Every section should connect a client fact to a rule, consequence and conclusion.

Two weeks before: test sustainability and alternatives. Add calculations, stress scenarios and reasons for rejecting weaker options.

One week before: check the tax-year basis, references, structure, word count and whether any section answers a question that was not asked.

Avoid using the final days to discover the client’s actual shortfall. The numerical foundation should already be stable before editing.

Practise the Retirement Strategy as a Layered Plan

Start with essential spending and dependable income. Then assess flexible withdrawals for lifestyle goals, contingency and legacy.

For each pension or investment source, record:

  • who owns it;
  • when it can be accessed;
  • whether income is guaranteed, level, escalating or variable;
  • who bears longevity, inflation and market risk;
  • the tax consequence of the proposed withdrawal;
  • the death or survivor position; and
  • what would trigger a review.

Annuity and drawdown comparisons should not stop at first-year income. UFPLS and pension commencement lump sum plus drawdown should not be described as tax-identical. An ISA and an investment bond should not be compared without distinguishing tax exemption from tax deferral.

Keep Later Life Inside the Main Plan

Do not leave chapters 7 and 8 as an appendix to retirement planning. Test what happens if care is needed, a partner remains at home, an attorney must act or a proposed gift reduces accessible capital.

Keep NHS Continuing Healthcare eligibility separate from local-authority means testing. Verify the relevant UK jurisdiction, current thresholds and authority document. A vulnerable client may retain capacity and need an adapted process rather than substituted decision-making.

Estate planning begins with affordability. Before recommending gifts or trusts, show that the client can still fund essential income, contingencies and plausible care. For transferable nil-rate-band calculations, use the unused percentage rather than carrying forward an old cash figure.

Review Every Draft Against Five Questions

  1. Did I answer the exact command word?
  2. Did I apply each technical point to a named fact?
  3. Are calculations, assumptions and the tax year visible?
  4. Did I test risk, sustainability, later life and survivor effects?
  5. Is the conclusion supported by the analysis rather than introduced for the first time?

AF8 rewards a controlled advisory argument. The goal of the study plan is to make that argument repeatable before each official assignment begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

1 How should I organise study for CII AF8?

Map the eight study-text chapters to the four syllabus criteria, then use repeated fact-find analysis, calculations and short written plans rather than relying on passive rereading.

2 When are the three AF8 assignments due?

During the 12-month enrolment, the three assignments are due at approximately months 3, 6 and 9. Check the exact dates shown in your own enrolment record.

3 Does AF8 have a timed exam?

No. AF8 is assessed through three written coursework assignments, each typically 2,000–3,000 words.

4 What prior knowledge is assumed for AF8?

CII assumes R04 Pensions and Retirement Planning knowledge or an equivalent foundation. Refresh pension-access and tax fundamentals before beginning advanced case analysis.

5 What is the strongest way to improve an AF8 assignment?

Apply each point to the client, show workings, state assumptions, test sustainability and use the exact command word. Generic product description should be kept subordinate to analysis.
